Following the Dodgers’ loss on June 13, they found themselves tied with the Giants for first place in the NL West. With two more against their rival, including an upcoming four-game series against the Padres, not only was first place in jeopardy, there was a chance the Dodgers could fall to third place in the division relatively quickly.
Up until that point, June hadn’t been too kind to the Dodgers. They were 5-7 to begin the month and were right in the middle of a 22-game stretch in 23 days. They weren’t playing their best baseball and the remainder of the month looked like a gauntlet.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and we’ve reached the end of June. That incredibly difficult stretch is over. Since losing on Friday the 13th, the Dodgers finished the month by going 12-3. Entering June 14, the Dodgers were tied for first in the NL West. On June 30, their lead in the division is seven games (!!!!). In just a little over two weeks, they saw their division lead jump to a very comfortable number.
Obviously anything can happen over the remainder of the season. There is a lot of baseball to be played. But with a 7-game lead and only 77 games remaining, a massive collapse would have to happen from the Dodgers to blow this lead.
Oh, for anyone wanting to keep score, the magic number is currently at 72!
