When spring training began, Gavin Stone wasn’t even supposed to be in the Dodgers’ starting rotation. There was still going to be a competition for the fifth spot, but the likely choice was going to be Emmet Sheehan.
Stone was awful in 2023, there’s no way to sugarcoat it. He appeared in eight games, posting a 9.00 ERA, 6.64 FIP and 1.90 WHIP in 31 innings. Small sample size, sure… but it was a horrific sample.
Once Sheehan went down with an injury, that fifth spot in the rotation opened up. Stone looked great in spring training and was named the Dodgers’ No. 5 starter in the rotation.
After being the last guy to make LA’s Opening Day roster, Stone has put together an All-Star caliber first half.
