The Dodgers shocked everyone this offseason when they went out and signed reliever Tanner Scott to a four-year deal.
Andrew Friedman is well known for not paying top dollar for relievers. Instead, he likes to acquire bullpen pieces off waivers or in trades. It’s a strategy that has worked out greatly for the team, as majority of the bullpen pieces in recent years have been those kind of additions.
Well, he said ‘Screw it!’ and gave Scott $72 million this offseason. Now, the move made perfect sense. Scott was arguably the best closer in baseball last season and has been one of the top relievers in all of baseball the last few seasons.
Unfortunately, we’re seeing why Friedman has been against shelling out a lot of money to relievers.
Scott has been a disappointment through the first two months of the season. As we get ready to enter June, the lefty owns a 4.62 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Opponents are hitting .260 off him. He’s blown five games already, with three coming in his last five games.
I’ll ask a simple question. Should we be worried about Tanner Scott?
