For weeks, Dodgers fans have been calling for rookie Hyeseong Kim to be called up from the minors. He was doing well in Oklahoma City and many wanted to see him get a shot on the big league roster. Despite his success, there was no room on the active roster for him.
The plan for Kim was to stay in OKC and work on his swing, likely for at least another month. Well, injuries change things. With Tommy Edman being placed on the IL, the Dodgers needed a position player to be called up. Due to his defensive versatility, Kim made the most sense.
After being called up, we barely saw Kim. We saw him pinch-run and spend an inning in the field. The plan, originally according to Dave Roberts, was for Kim to not really see any game action. They just wanted him available if he was needed to pinch-run or play defense. We weren’t going to see him get many starts. Well, an injury to Teoscar Hernandez changed that as well. With another bat down, Kim was needed to step up.
He started all three games in Miami for the Dodgers. Three games is such a small sample size, so it’s hard to reach too much into the body of work. With that being said, Kim was better than advertised.
