The Dodgers need to figure this out...

The winter meetings have been pretty quiet so far. Although they just began, it appears that the entire baseball world is waiting on Shohei Ohtani to sign. Once that happens, expect a number of moves.

Although the Dodgers didn’t make a move on Monday, there was some pretty big news that came out. It didn’t come via a reporter, it came via manager Dave Roberts. When giving an interview on MLB Network, Roberts was asked about Mookie Betts’ role for the 2024 season.

“It’s pretty safe to say that number 50, Mookie Betts, is going to be our everyday second baseman. It’s one of those things that, he’s a Gold Glover out in right field, but I think that when you’re putting together a roster, and someone who can be so offensive at second base, you can get more games out of him if he is playing second base.

Obviously with the signing of Jason Heyward, to put him out there in right field, to play vs. right-handed pitching and to play a Gold Glove right field, it just makes our club better. Now you get a happy Mookie Betts, a guy that can post and play 160 games, it makes the Dodgers much better. It’s pretty much a no-brainer.”

We knew that Betts would likely be seeing a lot of time at second base next season… but giving him the keys to second base in December? I didn’t see that one coming!

I’m sure Betts will get an occasional start in right field here and there, but the plan appears to be for the former MVP to be the everyday second baseman.

Personally, I actually love the move. Finding a second baseman that provides the offense Betts gives you is very rare. It makes the Dodgers’ lineup that much deeper. Only, there’s one major issue now.

With Betts moving to the infield, the Dodgers should have a new priority for the offseason, excluding signing Ohtani, of course….
